Lake Saint-Pierre

Lake Saint-Pierre encompasses a stretch of the St. Lawrence River located between Sorel-Tracy and Trois-Rivières. The lake has a superficy of approximately 480 km2. The main feature of Lake Saint-Pierre is its archipelago made of 103 islands and a labyrynth of channels. This seasonally-flooded area is an important stopover for hundreds of thousands of migrating waterfowl. It is also the largest nesting-ground for herons in North America. The lake, including its shoreline, islands, and wetlands, is a nature reserve. In 1998, it was recognized as a wetland of international significance under the Ramsar Convention. Lake Saint-Pierre was also designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2000.
